Description
In 1995, a journey to Nepal ignited a passion for travel photography that has taken me to some of the world’s most breathtaking places. When my husband gifted me a camera, I began documenting my adventures, drawn especially to colors and textures. So, when the opportunity to visit Morocco came in 2023, I knew it would be an artist’s dream—and it did not disappoint.
Morocco overwhelmed me with its vibrant hues, intricate designs, and rich cultural layers. I found myself endlessly captivated by the doors, each one unique, each one telling its own story. Once I returned home, I discovered that my camera had captured dozens of doorways, each speaking to me through colors and textures. They seemed to invite me to wonder about what lay on the other side, or simply to sit and reflect.
Cross these thresholds, as we did, and travel through Morocco. From the bustling streets of Casablanca to the serene capital of Rabat, and the vibrant blue alleys of Chefchaouen, each step reveals a story. Wander through the ancient Roman ruins of Volubilis, explore the historic walls of Meknes and Fes, and feel the echoes of centuries past in these timeless cities.
Venture into the desert towns of Erfoud and Rissani, follow the fabled Route of 1,000 Kasbahs, and marvel at the grandeur of Kasbah Ait Benhaddou—a striking bridge between history and modernity, immortalized in films like Lawrence of Arabia and Gladiator.
In Marrakech, the sights and sounds of the Koutoubia Mosque and vibrant markets come alive, while the coastal town of Essaouira enchants with its picturesque charm. Finally, step into El Jadida, where Moorish, French, and Portuguese influences weave together into a breathtaking tapestry of architecture and history.
Moroccan doors and interiors are renowned for their elaborate craftsmanship, reflecting centuries of cultural influence. Blending African, Mediterranean, and Middle Eastern traditions, Morocco is a mosaic of history, artistry, and devotion. The repeating geometric patterns, or “arabesque,” which symbolize eternity, are everywhere, prompting meditation on the eternal nature of life and God, as one guide explained to me. With hand-carved plasterwork, mosaic tiles, ornate woodwork, and even Maghrebi script, the doors of Morocco represent a deep reverence for beauty and tradition.
This book is a tribute to these doorways—to the artistry, spirituality, and timeless allure of Morocco that invite us in, urging us to pause, and to marvel.
